Recent University Senate Actions & Announcements

Following the release of the Senate Review Committee Report and its recommendation to "establish 12-year term limits for Senators, aligned with those for Trustees," and recognizing “the importance of balancing the value of institutional memory with the importance of democratic turnover” regarding University Senate Committee leadership, the Executive Committee has proposed an amendment (Section 3.10.c.-d.) to University Senate By-Laws. 

The amendment would:

  • Institute 12-year term limits for University Senators, and
  • Limit the holding of a committee chair assignment to three consecutive terms…

Dear Members:

The Executive Committee has approved the recommendation of the Structure and Operations Committee that University Senate terms end on August 31 and new terms begin on September 1. This will take effect immediately.

This is intended to ensure that constituencies have representation over the summer period should matters require the attention or action of the University Senate.

Elections to the University Senate are now taking place and we hope you will participate in Columbia's exercise in shared governance. You will find more information here on the schools and constituencies to which elections are being held and on the work of University Senators. 

The University Senate is seeking to include the community in the trustee-nomination process. 

Columbia University's Board of Trustees consists of 24 members: 

  • 12 seats are appointed by the Board
  • 6 seats are appointed from among Senate-Consulted Trustees nominations
  • 6 seats are appointed from among Columbia Alumni Association nominations

Sen. Adana Llanos has been elected to the Executive Committee by the Tenured Faculty Caucus. Sen. Llanos' Executive Committee term begins immediately and runs until August 31, 2027.

Nasser Odetallah was elected to the University Senate, representing the student body of the School of the Arts. Sen. Odetallah's term begins now and runs until May 2027. 

Kara Lamb was elected to the University Senate, representing the population of Professional Research Officers. Sen. Lamb's term begins now and runs until August 31st, 2027. 

In response to longstanding student concerns regarding maintenance, capacity and equipment upkeep issues at Dodge Fitness Center, the Student Affairs Committee is delighted to announce Columbia’s new partnership with Wellhub.

Wellhub is a fitness and wellness services provider, offering affordable off-campus gym access across the city and nationwide. After significant subsidization from Columbia, students are now able to register for a subscription-based network which offers access to multiple fitness providers at discounted rates.
