The Forum

As an operative staff member, I have had the opportunity to support numerous visions within the Harlem and Columbia University communities. However, I also understand many of the difficulties our affiliates face in the pursuit of higher education and recognize a disconnect between the university community and how we engage with the public. I may not have great prestige or notoriety, but I do believe I have an essential perspective that could make our school more accessible.

Melinda A. Aquino

Associate Dean of Multicultural Affairs

CC/SEAS Undergraduate Student Life

My name is Melinda Aquino (she/hers), and I am honored to run for University Senate representing Morningside-Lamont Administrative Staff.

I currently serve as the Associate Dean of Multicultural Affairs, Columbia College and Columbia Engineering. Working at Columbia since 2005, I bring a long history of advocacy; deep understanding of campus culture and political dynamics; connections across the University; and dedication to equity, access, and inclusion.

I have served on numerous University-wide and school-wide committees/ working groups focused on student life, campus climate, bias response, staff training, and systems/policies review and enhancement.

I am a strong advocate for staff benefits and resources. I am the proud mother of Audrey (12), Theodore (10), Noreen (3), and Henry (1) and have navigated family and disability leave, lactation room access, back-up care, and school and housing Work/Life resources. I have utilized officer/spouse tuition benefits and VRSP. I also bring a critical eye to the increasing costs of healthcare and other benefits.

Following the heavy toll of this past academic year on staff, I am especially committed to championing the well-being of employees, continual staff development opportunities, and increased attention to the complex needs of staff.

Thank you for your consideration

Kara Avanceña

Director of Public Affairs

School of Law

One of the great privileges I have as a staff member at Columbia is working alongside earnest and hardworking colleagues across the University, including some of the thousands of administrative staff on the Morningside-Lamont campuses. Over the past six years, I have served in communications roles at the Law School and in the University’s Office of Public Affairs. I have seen firsthand the care, resilience, and thoughtfulness of our staff—from emails seeking best practices to address students’ doxing concerns to late-night hours spent working to keep our community safe and informed— and the positive impact of these actions on our campus every day. But I have also seen colleagues who otherwise love their work get discouraged, or worse, demoralized by conditions on campus, leaving them and others to wonder whether the time and energy they invest into the University are valued. It is too easy for our voices to be diluted, overlooked, and siloed. If elected to this seat on the University Senate, I will dedicate myself to listening to your concerns and to ensuring the interests of administrative staff are heard on issues that affect us specifically and on issues that affect our Columbia community generally

As a recent graduate of Rutgers University and a current administrative member of the Registrar's office, supporting members of the university at various levels, I bring a diverse perspective to the Administrative Staff University Senate seat. As an undergraduate, I served as Senator for the Minority Engineering Educational Task Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. This allowed me to actively engage with the Northeast Region Senate members and amplify the voices of chapter members across the region. Additionally, my collegiate-level involvement as Mental Health Chair and Regional Collegiate Connection Chair for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, and a Rutgers Student Health Peer Educator allowed me to focus on building inclusive community spaces on campus through impactful programming and events. I am eager to bring my experience and dedication to the University Senate, advocate for the interests of administrative staff, and contribute to the advancement of our university and community.

Abdalla F. Hassan

Assistant Director of Emeritus Professors in Columbia

Office of the Provost

As a candidate for the University Senate, I am committed to fostering inclusive and democratic participation across all segments of our university community—staff, students, faculty, research officers, and alumni. The University Senate must serve as a robust democracy-building body, establishing stronger frameworks for engagement with the University Administration. Columbia University’s strength lies in safeguarding academic freedom and freedom of expression. Woven into both the local and global community, our institution must actively promote social, economic, and climate justice. Our commitment to justice is essential in building a stronger, more equitable Columbia. This requires pursuing scholarship and research that advance our society and ensuring that the university’s investments align with our highest values. Our endowment decisions must focus on alleviating human suffering, promoting peace, and protecting our fragile ecosystem. I advocate for an endowment strategy that actively invests in cutting-edge research right here at Columbia. We must develop a collaborative, ethical, and just model for university investing. As a member of the University Senate, I will work toward a Columbia that not only excels in education, research, and scholarship but also leads in elevating justice, dignity, and equal opportunity. —Abdalla F. I’d like to serve on the University Senate to become a more active participant in how the University makes important policy decisions that affect everyone, from students, to faculty, to staff and more, on our Columbia campus. I believe that now more than ever, it is important for seemingly disparate groups to come together and gather around common goals- initiating, respecting, and following agreed upon policies in an effort to maintain fairness and ensure that the voices emanating from all of our populations are heard. I have a strong familiarity with and affinity for Columbia University, as my time here has not only involved working at Columbia in an administrative capacity, but I previously attended the University as a student for the last half of my undergraduate education. Having held these different roles at the University, I believe I can see and empathize with multiple perspectives across campus, which is an important skill set when working with multiple stakeholders. I would be honored to be considered for the position of University Senator for administrative staff officers.

Alex Oberweger

Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications

Department of Intercollegiate Athletics

The Columbia University Senate needs representatives who believe in this great institution, and are invested in its success. I have spent more than half of my life on Morningside Heights (and in Inwood) as a student ('92CC, '01BUS) and as an officer in both Alumni & Development and Athletics. In a city as dynamic as New York, there are few institutions which exemplify better than Columbia University what this city has to offer. The incredible diversity, record of historical influence and commitment to excellence ar cornerstones of all facets of the University. I know that Columbia, as an institution, will succeed or fail based on whether or not the people who study, teach and work here are interested in and share in its accomplishments, and have a strong belief that it governs itself properly. As a former University Senator, representing the Graduate School of Business more than two decades ago, I know that it is very important that all constituent groups of the University have effective representation in the University Senate. To be given the opportunity to represent all of the hard-working officers who make the University run would be a tremendous privilege.

In this capacity, I oversee educational agreements and academic initiatives that support our strategic goals. I want to join the University Senate to represent our community's interests, advocate for policies that enhance our educational and research environment, and ensure all voices are heard in our governance processes. My progression from student to Assistant Provost provides a unique perspective on our community's needs and aspirations. I appreciate your support and the opportunity to serve.

I am Kirstie Reynoso-Miranda, and I am delighted to submit my candidacy for University Senate. I have been part of the University community for five years, serving in various capacities within Human Resources. My dual experience in human resources and as a graduate student provides me with a nuanced perspective that is crucial for effective representation in the University Senate. I am committed to ensuring all voices, especially those of our less visible populations, are heard and valued. If elected, I commit to ensuring the needs of the diverse University community are addressed with empathy and urgency. Thank you for considering my candidacy.

I am excited to run for the open University Senate position here at Columbia University. Being a first generation college graduate and first to obtain a graduate degree, I deeply understand the importance of education and the opportunities afforded by the democratic process this University Senate serves. As a U.S. Army Combat Medic, student government leader, volunteer community board member and now Assistant Director of Human Resources, I have devoted myself to the service and advocacy of others. Policy and governance are critical components to the success of any organization. In my current position as Assistant Director of Human Resources, I am positioned to drive and ensure that organizational practices are fair, inclusive, and aligned with strategic goals, which ultimately serve stakeholder satisfaction and organizational success. I view Columbia University as the leading institution for academic ethical integrity and am extremely proud to be a part it. I wholeheartedly believe that I will contribute a meaningful perspective to this institution and put the concerns of the population and communities we serve at the forefront of my intentions.

Associate Director, Administration – Human Capital Management

School of Professional Studies

This is my sixth year at Columbia, where I work as the Associate Director of Administration for the M.S. in Human Capital Management program at the School of Professional Studies. In addition, I co-chair the School of Professional Studies Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Committee (SPS DEIA) and am the 2023 recipient of the Dean’s Excellence Award (the highest annual honor given to a staff member at SPS). I have felt a tremendous amount of gratitude for the investment toward my growth and development. It would be an honor to continue to contribute as part of the University Senate. As co-chair of the DEIA Committee, I recognized an opportunity for increased development and support of staff needs. I am highly interested in the opportunity to create such impact University-wide.

Theater Manager

Italian Academy

As a witness to the disturbing events on campus last spring, I am committed to advocate for conditions of fairness for all within a context of antiracism, religious tolerance, and academic excellence. There is ample space at Columbia for free expression and protest, none for police violence. I hope never again to see a group of our students dragged away in handcuffs and taken to jail only to have the charges against them later dropped, nor hear of a cop’s gun being fired inside a Columbia building. All forms of hatred must be addressed, but not with the assistance of the NYPD. Columbia’s exemplary unarmed Public Safety Department remains capable of ensuring our safety. The expression of political protest is not only legal but vital to higher education. As a Senator, I would seek to protect freedom of expression along with the rights of all to be safe and cared for on our open, inclusive campus, where I have happily worked for some 23 years.

Gavin Whitt

Associate Manager, Housing Services

Columbia Housing

With great excitement, I am running for a seat on the University Senate. Columbia University, just like many universities around the country, is at a critical juncture. Socially and academically, we’re facing headwinds from political and current events that are having a pointed impact on Columbia’s students, staff and faculty. I have a heart for people and fervently believe that any individual who’s a part of a governing body has a major responsibility to be self-aware, compassionate, logical, and able to think critically. I am an advocate for environments that promote equity and equality; where all individuals can thrive and are treated with dignity and respect. It is my hope that being elected to this position will allow me to effect positive change for all of the university's population. I desire to be an active voice of this body as it decides new policies and procedures that continue to move this university forward.

Career Placement Officer

Industrial Engineering & Operations Research

Esteemed members of the Columbia University community, I am submitting my candidacy for the Columbia University Senate with great enthusiasm and readiness. My journey began with the Teachers College Senate, where I engaged in a nurturing environment that broadened my understanding of crucial topics such as accessibility and project adequacy. This invaluable experience demonstrated the transformative power of connecting resources with various university groups. Following this, I was selected to join the Interschool Governing Board at Columbia University. In this role, I worked alongside other representatives to evaluate student group projects, focusing on distributed progress, decision-making, and the epistemic aspects of submissions. This reinforced my commitment to fostering transparent and inclusive governance. My experience extends to global initiatives, including working on United Nations projects. I contributed to a policy draft addressing the inter-linkage of several goals: Goal 3 (health and well-being), Goal 8 (decent work), and Goal 5 (gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls). I am eager to bring these pillars to the Columbia community. Joining the University Senate would be a profound honor. I am dedicated to driving action-oriented processes and ensuring our discussions result in tangible benefits for all. Thank you for considering my candidacy.

Susan E. Young

Executive Assistant to the Executive Vice President

Office of EVP Arts & Sciences

Susan E. Young is one of many executive assistants supporting senior leadership throughout the University and has been in this role for two years. In addition to managing calendars for two senior staff in Arts & Sciences, she also develops and manages events and helps administer elections for A&S committees. While events this past Spring emphasized the importance of the University Senate in times of crisis, her primary interest in joining the University Senate is around perennial concerns – officer benefits making Columbia an attractive place to work, technology policy, and campus access that affect the ease of that work, and campus planning affecting the development of our workplace, in addition to the University Senate’s work to overall build a culture that supports all students and employees. As University Senator, Susan hopes to engage around these issues for the good of present and future colleagues across the University.
