RESOLUTION TO ESTABLISH AN M.S. IN CRITICAL, CURATORIAL
AND CONCEPTUAL PRACTICES IN ARCHITECTURE (GSAPP)
WHEREAS architectural production is multifaceted and careers often extend beyond traditional modes of professional practice and academic scholarship, and
WHEREAS there is a demand within the
architectural community for informed critics and curators, and for publications
and rigorous research, and
WHEREAS there is a demand by those with a background in architecture who wish to advance their critical, scholarly and research skills to pursue careers as diverse as architectural critics, historians, theorists, journalists, editors, publishers, curators, teachers and research-based practitioners, as well as those wishing to pursue doctorates in architectural history and theory, and
WHEREAS Columbia has a unique potential to respond to these demands, and
WHEREAS the proposed two-year program does not duplicate any existing program at Columbia, and
WHEREAS the proposed program has the support of the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and the Provost, and
WHEREAS the Education Committee of the Senate has favorably reviewed the proposal,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the University Senate approve the proposed program and forward it to the Trustees for appropriate action with the proviso that the Education Committee will review the program in five years.
