University Senate Proposed: March 29, 2002

Adopted:

RESOLUTION TO LEARN ABOUT THE SCALE OF SALARY DISPARITIES

AMONG SENIOR FACULTY WITHIN ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS

WHEREAS, Columbia faculty salaries, like other closely held secrets, are the subject of intense speculation, and

WHEREAS, anecdotal evidence also suggests severe disparities among the salaries of senior colleagues within certain departments, and

WHEREAS, any effort to correct inequities in faculty salaries must draw on reliable aggregate information;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Senate ask the Provost to provide the Faculty Affairs Committee every September with the following salary information for each academic department:

the ratio of the salary of the highest-paid full professor to that of the lowest-paid full professor, along with the average salary for full professors in the department.
