University Senate Proposed: March 29, 2002
Adopted:
RESOLUTION TO LEARN ABOUT THE SCALE
OF DISPARITIES IN SALARIES BETWEEN LANGUAGE
LECTURERS AND
ASSISTANT PROFESSORS WITHIN ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS
WHEREAS, Columbia faculty salaries, like other
closely held secrets, are the subject of intense speculation, and
WHEREAS,
all evidence suggests that Language
Lecturers in at Columbia are seriously underpaid, with typical annual salaries
well below $40,000, and
WHEREAS, any effort to correct inequities in faculty
salaries must draw on reliable aggregate information;
THEREFORE
BE IT RESOLVED, that the Senate ask
the Provost to provide the Faculty Affairs Committee every September with the
following salary information for each academic department:
the ratio of the salary of the
lowest-paid Assistant Professor to that of the lowest-paid Language Lecturer,
along with the average salary for the Language Lecturers in the department.
